10 Maintenance Items For Warmer Weather

Winter in Washington is finally starting to loosen its grip on our vehicles. After months of freezing rain, morning frost, and road salt, your car has likely taken a beating that you cannot see from the sidewalk. At Federal Way Automotive, we have spent over 35 years helping our neighbors transition from winter slogs to sunny road trips. Taking care of your seasonal maintenance now is the best way to keep your family safe as the temperatures begin to climb.

Most drivers think of car care as something you do only when a light pops up on the dashboard. However, being proactive means you won’t end up on the shoulder of the highway with a hood full of steam. When the air gets warmer, your engine has to work harder to stay cool and your tires face different road conditions. We want to help you get ahead of those issues before they turn into a major auto repair bill.

10 Essential Maintenance Items for the New Season

Every vehicle has a unique story, especially after a long winter. Some cars have been sitting in cold garages while others have been battling slush every morning. This list covers the most common areas where warm weather puts a strain on your vehicle. By checking these ten items, you are building a foundation of reliability for the months ahead.

1. The Seasonal Oil Change

The most basic service you can perform is a high-quality oil change. During the winter, your engine oil can thicken or collect moisture from short trips where the engine never fully warms up. This “sludge” doesn’t lubricate your moving parts as effectively as it should. When the weather gets hot, that old oil breaks down even faster.

Fresh oil acts as both a lubricant and a coolant for your internal engine parts. Replacing it now helps your motor run smoother and quieter during those long weekend drives. It is a small investment that adds years to the life of your car.

2. Radiator Flush and Cooling System Health

Your car’s cooling system is the only thing standing between you and a melted engine. A radiator flush is one of the most overlooked services, yet it is incredibly important. Over time, antifreeze loses its ability to prevent rust and corrosion inside your radiator and engine block.

If your coolant is several years old, it might have particles of metal or scale floating in it. These can clog the small passages in your radiator, leading to overheating the moment you hit a hill or turn on the air conditioner. A professional flush removes the gunk and replaces it with fresh fluid that can handle the rising heat.

3. Staying Comfortable with AC Service

Nothing ruins a family trip faster than a cabin that feels like an oven. You might not have used your air conditioner much over the last few months. Now is the time to schedule an AC service to verify that your system is still sealed and charged.

We check for small leaks in the hoses and make sure the compressor is engaging correctly. If your vents are blowing slightly warm air, it usually means your refrigerant level is low. Catching a small leak now is much cheaper than replacing a seized compressor later in July.

4. Maximize MPG with Fuel Injection Service

With gas prices always on our minds, a fuel injection service is a smart move for your budget. Over time, carbon deposits build up on the tips of your injectors. This ruins the fine mist of fuel your engine needs to burn efficiently.

When your injectors are dirty, your engine has to gulp down more gas to get the same amount of power. Cleaning them restores your fuel economy and gives you back that “pep” when you merge onto the highway. It also helps your car start easier on those first few humid mornings of spring.

5. The Standard Seasonal Tune-up

A modern tune-up is a bit different than it was 35 years ago, but the goal is the same. We look at your spark plugs, ignition coils, and wires to make sure your engine is firing perfectly. Winter can be hard on electrical components, and a weak spark leads to wasted fuel and rough idling.

Replacing worn spark plugs is one of the fastest ways to improve performance. It takes the strain off your battery and starter motor, too. This service is a great time for us to look at your overall engine health and spot any minor leaks before they become big problems.

6. Tire Pressure and Tread Depth

Temperature changes have a massive impact on your tire pressure. For every ten-degree change in the air, your tires can gain or lose a pound of pressure. Running on tires that are too soft or too hard leads to uneven wear and poor handling.

We also look at your tread depth to make sure you can handle those spring rain showers. Balding tires are prone to hydroplaning, which is a major safety risk for families. We can rotate your tires as part of your visit to make sure they wear evenly across all four corners.

7. Battery Performance Check

Winter is famous for killing batteries, but the summer heat is actually what does the most internal damage. Cold weather makes it hard to start the car, but heat causes the internal fluids to evaporate. If your battery struggled at all during the winter, it probably won’t survive the first heatwave.

Our team can test your battery’s “cold cranking amps” to see how much life is left in the cells. If it is more than three years old, it is worth a quick check. We also clean any corrosion off the terminals to make sure the power can flow freely to your starter.

8. Brake System Inspection

Salt and road grime from winter can get trapped in your brake calipers and pads. This can cause them to stick or wear down faster than normal. If you hear a squeak or feel a pulse in the pedal, your brakes are trying to tell you something.

We look at the thickness of your pads and the condition of your rotors. Stopping power is the most important safety feature on your car. Making sure your brakes are ready for the stop-and-go traffic of summer travel is a top priority for our technicians.

9. Fresh Windshield Wipers

Your wiper blades have likely been frozen to the glass more than a few times this year. That ice tears the delicate rubber edge, leading to streaks and missed spots. Spring showers in Federal Way can be intense, and you need to be able to see the road clearly.

Replacing your wipers is a fast and easy task that makes a huge difference in your driving comfort. We also top off your washer fluid with a formula that helps break down the bugs and pollen that come with the warmer air.

10. Inspecting Belts and Hoses

Rubber parts don’t like extreme temperature swings. The hoses that carry your coolant and the belts that drive your alternator can become brittle or cracked after a cold winter. If a belt snaps or a hose bursts while you are driving, your engine will stop almost immediately.

We perform a visual check for any bulging, leaking, or fraying. These parts are relatively inexpensive to replace as part of your regular maintenance routine. It is a lot better to swap a belt in our shop than to wait for a tow truck on the side of the road.
