The signs your car needs an alignment are easy to live with, which is exactly why so many people do. You hold the wheel a little off-center. The car wanders on I-5. The steering wheel emblem has been crooked since spring.
None of it feels urgent. Meanwhile the tires are quietly wearing out on one edge, and around here tread depth is what stands between you and a wet on-ramp in October.
Here is how to tell whether yours has drifted out, and why the timing matters more than you would think.
Signs Your Car Needs an Alignment
These come on gradually, which is why they get normalized. Roughly in order of how easy they are to spot:
- A pull to one side. On a flat, straight stretch, ease your grip for a moment. Most roads crown slightly and will drift a little right. A firm, consistent pull is something else.
- An off-center steering wheel. The car goes straight but the wheel does not sit straight. This is the clearest sign there is.
- Uneven tire wear. Wear on the inside or outside shoulder points at camber. Tread that feels smooth one direction and sharp the other means toe.
- The wheel will not self-center. Coming out of a turn, the steering should unwind on its own. Having to walk it back points at caster.
- Constant small corrections. The car needs steady input to hold a lane instead of tracking on its own.
- Tires chirping in ordinary turns. Rubber dragging sideways rather than rolling cleanly makes noise it should not make.
The tire wear check is the useful one because it is evidence, not a feeling. Run your hand flat across the tread from one edge to the other. Smooth one way, sharp and feathered the other, means a toe problem.
The Three Angles That Matter
Alignment is the set of angles your wheels sit at relative to the road and to each other.
Toe
Whether the wheels point in or out, seen from above. This is the angle that most often drifts and the one that eats tires quickest. A wheel scrubbing sideways a fraction of a degree wears rubber off continuously.
Camber
The inward or outward lean of the wheel, seen from the front. Too much of it loads one shoulder of the tire, which is how you end up with good tread on the outside and bald rubber on the inside edge.
Caster
The tilt of the steering axis front to back. Caster gives a car straight-line stability and returns the wheel to center after a turn. Uneven caster side to side shows up as a pull.
These are set in fractions of a degree against a factory specification, which is why it takes a machine and not a good eye.
What Puts It Out Around Here
Usually it is accumulation rather than one memorable event.
Potholes do most of the work. Wet winters and the freeze-thaw cycle break up pavement steadily, and by August the roads around Tacoma, Fife, and Milton have had a full year to develop them.
Curbs count too. A low-speed parking lot bump is enough to shift toe, and it usually happens without any noise you would remember.
Construction plates, expansion joints, and unpaved shoulders all add their share across a season.
Then there are worn parts. Tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, and struts develop play over time. Once something has play in it, an alignment will not hold, because the geometry shifts while the car is moving.
That is worth knowing before you buy an alignment anywhere. Setting angles on a car with a worn tie rod end is money spent on something that will drift right back out.
What Leaving It Costs
Tires, first and most directly. A toe angle that is out by a small amount can take a large bite out of tire life, and a set of tires runs several times the price of an alignment.
Fuel economy suffers as well, since wheels that are not pointed where the car is headed create drag the engine has to overcome constantly.
Handling is the part that matters most in this climate. A car that is out of alignment responds differently in an emergency lane change and takes longer to settle. On wet pavement that gap gets wider.
The compounding problem is tread depth. Alignment wear eats tread unevenly, and tread depth is exactly what prevents hydroplaning. An alignment issue you ignore in August becomes a wet-weather problem in November.
Alignment Is Not Balancing, and Neither Is Rotation
These three get confused constantly.
- Alignment corrects suspension angles so the wheels point where they should. It cures pulling and uneven wear.
- Balancing adds small weights so the wheel and tire assembly spins smoothly. It cures vibration, usually felt between 55 and 70 mph.
- Rotation relocates tires so they wear evenly. It cures nothing by itself, but it stretches tire life.
Shaking at highway speed is nearly always balance. A pull or one-sided wear is nearly always alignment. You can certainly have both.
Rotating tires that are wearing unevenly without fixing the alignment just moves the problem to a different corner. When a wear pattern tells us something is off, we check the alignment rather than shuffling the tires and calling it done.
What About Rear Wheels and All-Wheel Drive
A common question is whether a four-wheel alignment is worth paying for over a front-end alignment. On most modern vehicles it is, and here is why.
Rear wheels have alignment angles too. If the rear axle is not tracking squarely behind the front, the car goes down the road slightly crab-walked, and the front wheels get steered to compensate. That is what leaves the steering wheel off-center even after a front alignment was done correctly.
A four-wheel alignment measures all four corners and sets the front to match where the rear is actually pointing. On an all-wheel drive vehicle it matters more still, because a drivetrain that is fighting mismatched geometry generates heat and wear it should not have to.
If your car has adjustable rear suspension, this is straightforward. If it does not, at minimum the rear should be measured so the front can be set correctly relative to it.
When You Should Have It Checked
- Whenever you notice any of the symptoms above
- After a solid pothole hit or curb strike, even if nothing seems wrong
- When you put on new tires, so the fresh set does not wear out the way the last one did
- After any steering or suspension repair, since new parts change the geometry
- Once a year as a general check, which is reasonable given our roads

A real alignment check starts under the car rather than on the rack. We look at the suspension and steering parts first, because setting angles on worn components is money thrown away.
If everything underneath is solid, the car goes on the rack, we measure all three angles against factory specification, and adjust what can be adjusted. You get the numbers before and after, not just our word that it is better.
Sometimes the finding is that alignment is fine and the real cause is a tire with a shifted belt or a brake that is dragging. Knowing that is worth the visit on its own.
